Points to Consider When You Compare Travel Insurance

Points to Consider When You Compare Travel Insurance
By Kym Chambers

If you’re going on holiday this year then getting solid travel insurance isn’t just a good idea, it’s essential. Medical bills abroad can be extremely costly and it’s simply not worth taking the risk. You needn’t break the bank though, provided you’re prepared to compare travel insurance quotes and shop around a bit to find the best deal. Here are some points to consider:

Annual cover
If you’re overwhelmed each time you look online to compare travel insurance and find the process irritating and repetitive, it can be easier to get annual cover and then not worry about travelling for a whole 12 months. Especially if you’re going to take three or more trips abroad in a year, annual cover is definitely the way to go, as you can often save yourself money as well as time.

Ski trip extras
If winter sports are your thing, make sure that your travel insurance covers you specifically for skiing and snowboarding. A normal travel insurance policy will not be sufficient on the slopes and will not be valid for a claim if you injure yourself. It’s worth taking the time to compare travel insurance quotes from sports specialists who deal specifically in winter holidays for the best prices.

Excess charges
When you compare travel insurance you need to have a look at how much excess you will have to pay should you get injured, require medicines, lose your luggage or have your money stolen. Some insurance companies charge as much as £200 for excesses, which is fine for a large medical bill but not so good if you lost your£60 handbag. Excess charges can be as low as £30, which can make a big difference to your claims.

Cover limits
Not only do you need to check the excess limit, your cover limit is essential when you compare travel insurance. No policy worth its salt will have a cover limit of less than £1 million. This should be the absolute minimum, but you can get much higher limits. Again, particularly if you are skiing, a much higher cover limit is recommended, between £3 million and £5 million should be fine.

Don’t rely on EHIC
You need to find a comprehensive travel insurance cover for your travels abroad. Whilst the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) can help reduce the costs of medical treatments in Europe, the only way to make sure you are going to get adequate medical treatment abroad is to compare travel insurance and get a decent policy.

Reasons You Will Require Travel Insurance

by Mike Holt

I have been fortunate growing up in Canada. We have a clean country, with much unspoiled wilderness. I have never had to pay to receive medical attention, and never thought that I would. What I didn’t know is that my great health care system would not cover any medical expenses I occurred while out of country. Not being aware of this, when the opportunity came up to spend spring break in Florida, I was only worried about sunscreen and condoms. I didn’t even know that there was such a thing as travel insurance.

Several alcohol fueled days later, I awoke in a hospital room. I thought that I was in agony when I woke up. I had a cast on my left leg, hurt everywhere and discovered when I tried to sit up that several of my ribs had been broken. From what I have managed to piece together from my friends, I had a pretty bad parasailing accident and had had to be rushed to emergency. I was bummed out about my trip being ruined, but when I got home things got much worse. I took my hospital bill from America into a government office and tried to get them to pay. No, we’re sorry, but since you received out-of-county care we are not responsible for these costs. What! Where was I, a starving college kid going to come up with $15, 000?

I have lived and learned, and if I ever pay off my debt enough to be able to travel again I will make sure I get insurance to protect against accidents. I hope that after reading this article you will think carefully about leaving the country without any coverage.

Before you think that you can’t afford insurance you should know that a very basic single-trip plan can cost as little as $40. Can you really afford to NOT have insurance? Forty dollars upfront that you may or may not use, is a lot easier to swallow than a few thousand or tens of thousands later on.

A basic plan may be fine if you are taking a guided tour of a foreign land, but if you are planning on going on an adventure expedition you may not be fully safe-guarded. It is therefore, very important to make a list of all the things you THINK you might do while on vacation. This way you can custom tailor a plan that will protect you should something go wrong.

I know it’s a drag, but take the time to read the fine print on your insurance policy. This is a contract that you are signing, and it was designed to protect the insurance company, not you. Make sure that you fully understand what your responsibilities and liabilities are. Do not sign until all of your questions have been answered and you are comfortable.

Other than medical costs, you will want to be covered against loss/theft of items. This will protect you if the airline loses your luggage or against been pick pocketed in the streets of Rome. A lot of people seem to neglect this, but think about how you’re going to get home if you lose your ticket or pass port. What will you do if you have no money and your credit cards are in the hands of a thief?

I sincerely wish that no one goes through the nightmare I did, but if it does happen to you be as prepared as you can be. Remember, that it is better to have protection and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Comparing all Types of Insurance

Insurance can be a tricky business. All the legalese, the unreadable fine print, and questionable tactics can keep you from finding out what your options are. You’ll surely get an insurance policy even if you buy hastily but it won’t probably be the best one.

Life, auto, and homeowner’s has several different types, and insurance companies offer a wide range of policies for each type. When you look for an insurance policy, begin your quest with an understanding of how the each form of insurance operates, so you can figure out which policies will work best for your individual needs.

It may surprise you to know that 65% of South Africans have no auto insurance at all. When we take the incidents of accidents and road injuries, this shocks us.

Auto cover is coming in three varieties, third party is the minimum coverage and guards you if you wound other person or hurt somebody’s belongings in an auto accident. Third party fire and theft will include cover that is provided below third party and will add security for impairment caused by fire, theft or attempted theft. A complete security is also provided to protect your automobile in an accident that is your mistake.

Judge against policies and quotes since auto cover premiums can be costly. Bargain with the insurance corporations for a better price and consider raised and high excesses security actions to lessen your premiums further.

Term life insurance is the least expensive option and provides cover for a specified amount of time or can be linked to specific debt obligations. Term life is beneficial for families that may have a large amount of debt that will be paid off by the end of the policys term.

Whole life insurance is permanent insurance that remains in effect as long as the premiums are up to date. The policy does not need to be renewed and the premiums remain the same throughout the life of the policy. It provides your beneficiaries a lump sum at your death regardless of when that occurs.

Universal life insurance cover is structured the same way as whole life in that it is permanent insurance with level premiums. In addition, it adds provides financial products such as a savings plan, investments and the ability to add a person to the policy. It is the most expensive life insurance option due to its flexibility.

Your life changes and it is always beneficial to check on the current status of your life insurance to make sure it is still meeting your needs.

Your options for homeowners insurance have expanded thanks to the National Credit Act. Previously, borrowers had to purchase their cover from the bank that financed their loan. Now, you can shop and choose the cover that fits your needs and budget. Youll be required to cede the policy to your lender so that your policy can pay your bank directly.

When shopping for insurance, remember the old adage that the cheapest policy isn’t always the best. For example, a bicycle costs less than a car but it will not serve the same transportation needs. Hence, you need to find an affordable insurance policy that meets your particular coverage concerns.
